My Journey at Dongguk, Korea
Hello, my name is Karima Imam Rachy, and I am a Spanish exchange student. My home university is the University of Valencia. I want to share with you how this first month of exchange in South Korea has been, an experience that has profoundly impacted my way of seeing things and has helped me open my mind, both personally and academically.
Since I arrived in Korea, I have felt a special connection with the culture. I have always been attracted to its culture, history, and traditions, but living here has allowed me to experience them in a completely different way. The kindness of Koreans has been one of the most notable and positive aspects for me. From my first days, the locals have made me feel welcome, whether on the street, in shops, or at the university. I have noticed they are always willing to help, and that has given me a great sense of security and comfort in an environment so different from my own.
One of my greatest pleasures here has been the food. Korean cuisine is delicious! I love experimenting with new flavors. Some of my favorites are tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and Korean fried chicken, which is simply irresistible. From my perspective, I feel that every meal here is an adventure, and although some dishes can be spicy or have an unusual taste for me, I have learned to enjoy them and understand a culture so different from the Spanish one through its flavors.
On the other hand, university life has also been an enriching experience. I study at Dongguk University, and I feel that the professors make a great effort to understand the needs and circumstances of each student, especially those of us who come from abroad. It is not just an academic approach; there is also a level of empathy that I greatly value. The Korean students have also been very attentive and collaborative. They constantly approach me to talk, which has helped me integrate more quickly into the group and university life. I have made amazing friends, not only Koreans but also exchange students from all over the world. This diversity has broadened my view of different cultures and enriched me both academically and personally.
Another aspect that has pleasantly surprised me is the cost of living. Despite being in such a modern city as Seoul, the lifestyle here is not excessively expensive. It is easy to find affordable options for food and transportation. Of course, not everything has been easy. Adapting to a country with such a different culture and language has been a challenge. Although I studied some Korean before coming, there are moments when I feel a bit lost, especially in everyday situations like shopping or reading menus at restaurants. Fortunately, the people here are very patient and understanding, which has made my adaptation much easier. Another challenge has been being far from home and my familiar environment. Although I have made friends here, I sometimes miss my routine in Valencia, as well as my friends and family. However, this challenge has helped me grow and become more independent.
