On Saturday, April 26th, to commemorate the 2569th Buddha’s Birthday, the Lantern Parade took place which was held in advance of the May 5th holiday. The Lantern Parade, which is registered as both a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and a national intangible cultural asset, started at Dongguk University’s sports field and made its way to Jogyesa Temple. This year, around 350,000 people gathered in the Jongno area. As Buddha’s Birthday coincided with Children’s Day this year, children led the parade. Venerable Jin-woo expressed his condolences, saying, “I extend deep sympathy to those who lost their lives in the forest fires and to the disaster victims who have lost their homes and are suffering. May the gentle light of the lanterns shine as become a beacon of hope for them.”
