On October 8th, Dongguk University held a student ID card design contest. The student competency development team of Dongguk University’s Student Affairs Ministry and The Emergency Committee of Dongguk University’s Student Council, Cheongmyeong, were organized together, and affiliated organizations were Shinhan Bank/Card and Kookmin Bank/Card. This contest was held with the aim of renewing the design of the student ID card, and the theme of the contest was to create a student ID design that represents Dongguk University. Considering carefully, the student ID card should be designed Dongguk University’s founding ideology and social norms and should be designed as an image to enhance the school image. The contest was open to all undergraduate and graduate students at Dongguk University, and the contest period was from October 8th to October 27th. Participants in the contest had to produce designs by referring to design guidelines provided by Shinhan Card. Shinhan Card’s logo and product name, IC chip and arrow, and international brand logo should be visible on the front of the card. The rest excluding such parts were up to the students to design. Meanwhile, the preliminary screening was conducted through a 100% student vote after the first round of screening by forming a preliminary review committee. The first round of screening was conducted on October 28th, and online student votes were held through Google Forms from October 29th to November 4th. During the online student votes, “Everytime,” a university community platform, posted a series of posts promoting works designed by oneself or friends, and asking students to vote for those works. The designs often incorporated symbols of Dongguk University, such as using the university’s symbolic orange color and featuring the school slogan, “The Power to Illuminate the World, the Name that Awakens It.” Additionally, there were simple white designs with the university logo, as well as creations featuring Dongguk University’s mascot, “Ako.”

As many students were disappointed that Dongguk University’s existing student cards did not contain the school’s symbolism compared to other schools, many students seemed to have attended and been interested in the contest. In addition, Dongguk University’s Student Emergency Committee, Cheongmyeong, held events to encourage voting by giving Starbucks coupons to five of the students who voted to encourage students to vote on the student ID design contest.

A total of 2,073 students voted in total, and 5,085 votes were counted as valid. A work of a student in the Department of Statistics was selected as the grand prize, and the design received 1,327 votes. The Excellence Award was awarded to a student in the Department of Construction and Environmental Engineering, and the design received 833 votes. The excellence prize was awarded to a student in the Department of Global Trade, who received 741 votes. Interestingly, students who were awarded were from non-related fields from design. The winners of the contest will be awarded scholarships of 500,000 won, 300,000 won, and 200,000 won, respectively, while 10 others will be given coffee coupons as participation prizes.

The Dongguk University Student Card Design Contest was held to enhance Dongguk University’s image and promote a sense of belonging, and it is significant in that the works designed by the students themselves are reflected in the design of the student card. Donggukians will be able to use their student ID cards with more affection, as the designs they created and voted for are reflected in them.
