Just Do It without Hesitating, Then You Can Make a Change

   Lee Jong-beom is currently an adjecent professor in the Department of Technology Start-up and is in the Doctor’s program at Dongguk University’s Graduate School of the Department of technology start-up. The Dongguk Post interviewed Lee to inspire Donggukians who are concerned about their career by sharing his career, start-up story, and thoughts.

Q1. Please introduce yourself.

   I am operating an Social Network Service (SNS) marketing company called “Dasol-in(dasolin.net),” and I started it in 2010 and have been running it until now. Currently, I am an adjunct professor in the Department of Technical Start-up at Dongguk University and also pursuing a Doctoral degree in the same departmentat at Dongguk University’s Graduate School. I also run a party room in Sinchon. Recently, I have been interested in Artificial Intelligence (AI), and I am trying to find business opportunities in that field.

Q2. You graduated from the Department of Animal Life Sciences at Konkuk University, and are now the CEO of an SNS marketing company. Please tell us about that process. 

   Well, I entered the university based on my grades. Since my father graduated from the Department of Animal Husbandry, he suggested I go to the same department, promising to support me. So I entered Department of Animal Husbandry at Kunkuk Univeristy, but my father did not support me at all, and the department really did not suit me. Therefore, I barely studied enough before I left to serve in the military.

   After I enlisted in the army, I looked back on myself, with thoughts about various things and life. I read about 1,000 books during my military service, and this became a turning point in my life. I focused on self-help, management, and economics books, and I thought, “I could make money too.” After I was discharged from the military, my cousin, who was running a shoe business, suggested me to buy his business at a low price, thinking that he would quit the business due to the low performance. At that time, I was confident that since I had read a lot of books, I can make money with my own operation. So I borrowed money from my parents and invested in that business. After that, while working on this project, Levi’s Jeans, which were accidentally placed on top of other, began to sell like hotcakes due to the “Levi’s boom” of the time. Therefore, I began selling Levi’s Jeans, and that was the time when I started on a roll. It worked well enough to run a company with annual sales of two billion won for about three and a half years. However, since time flows, the business had fallen. Also, since the Levi’s boom was over at the right time, I quit my business and returned to school.

   When I paid back the money I borrowed to organize my business, there was nothing left. Even though I returned back to my school, I thought I had a good experience. However, when I returned to school, the department had disappeared, and I had to choose one of the other departments. That is why I chose the Department of Animal Life Sciences. In the department, I conducted research in a laboratory and spent about a year and a half in a lab, which also did not suit me at all. Looking at a senior researcher in the lab, I thought I did not want to follow in his footsteps, and then I got married during my four year of college at the age of 29. My wife wanted to be a teacher, but she failed the appointment exam and was struggling. Even if I persuaded her with the idea that the value of the teacher would decrease since the number of children would decrease while increasing the number of teachers, she still wanted to be an educator. Therefore, my wife and I went to China to get a job teaching Korean. As I was teaching Korean to college students in rural China and conducting my classes based on subtitles from Korean entertainment programs, I started writing on blogs after organizing these things since I did not want to waste time watching television. Fortunately, my blog post became so popular that I was already a power blogger when I returned to Korea.

   Then, I got a call from a company that gathered bloggers from Korea, so I got a job in a marketing department and learned marketing for a year. After that, I left the company and started “Dasol-in,” an SNS marketing company. Since I was confident in SNS marketing, I started my business by collaborating with the existing company that I had been working for, after leaving the company.

Q3. You tried to start a business several times, and have experienced a few failures. What made you try to start a business several times, and why did you not give up?

   The primary reason for starting my own business was that I could not get a job due to my old age. However, I remembered making money from my own business when I was young, and I wanted to live by doing what I wanted to do since I have a free personality. Whenever I said my characteristics, the thing I heard the most was, “You cannot live doing what you want to do,” which I hated the most. I thought, “If I am going to do that, there is no reason to live that kind of life.” When I saw a life where people were tied to credits in college, tied to a company when they got a job, till death, I thought, “It is a once-in-a-lifetime anyway, so let us live as I want.” If I had not started my own business and continued to study, I probably would not have thought of this. However, the countless people I met while running a shoe sales company were already living their life doing what they wanted to do. As I met people who lived happily even if they did not make a lot of money and met people who lived happily while making a lot of money, I thought, “Then, cannot I live as I want whether I have money or not?” Since I wanted to live as I wanted, employment could never be an option, and of course, some people who cannot do as they want while starting a business, but I chose to start a business since I can live by doing what I want to do.

Q4. What difficulties do you have in operating the company as a CEO?

   I think the biggest difficulty is when I lose my freedom. I want to choose what I want to do, but sometimes I have to choose what I have to do, right? I think that is when I feel the biggest pain. For example, if you do not have any money right now and a huge case comes in, you will have to go to work. You have no choice but to work. I think that kind of situation is especially stressful for me. Also, given the case of a close client who sometimes asks me to lie, it is stressful for me since such a situation in human relationships puts pressure on things that go against my beliefs. I am sticking to my beliefs as much as I can by taking lessons from past failures, and if such pressure comes, I get a lot of stress.

Q5. What are the mindset, values, and capabilities that students who are dreaming of starting a business should have, and do you have any advice for them?

   First of all, execution is the most important thing. I am most afraid of people who do not know anything about something but just do it. These people somehow find a way to achieve their goals eventually. That is what “Entrepreneurship” is, and this entrepreneurship is not limited to corporations. Entrepreneurship is about moving, thinking, “Whatever, if there is an obstacle, I can just go through it.” Even if you do not know anything, you can achieve results if you are brave. The people who are fighting like that usually produce the results. Do not think of entrepreneurship as difficult, and if you are unsure about whether to do it or not, I recommend you to try it. The person who does it first achieves it.

   Second, you need to know the principle of making money. Some people live doing what they like. For example, artists are the case. Sometimes artists who suffer from hardships in life appear in the news, but if they learn the principle of making money, they may not suffer that much. The principle of making money is not methodical such as stock or real estate, but a “principle” of making money. For example, when people flock, they make money. If you somehow get a lot of people, you can make money out of it. Celebrities, religious groups, political groups, and influencers make money in that way. If you know this, you can at least avoid the hardships of life. Even if you have a part-time job, there will be people who will only do what they are paid for, and there will be people who will think about how to make money or opportunities to make money in that job and try to find out how to make money.

   Obviously, those who adopt the latter mindset can learn the principle of making money. The more you learn about these money-making principles, the less risk you can take.

   Third, I want to talk about creativity. Office workers should be creative, and especially entrepreneurs need more creativity. Creativity does not guarantee success, but it creates opportunities. Creativity is, after all, “weave two unrelated things together.” Creativity does not matter what major you are in. You can create opportunities by combining various fields you know, even if it is not about your major. In other words, I would advise you not to be a specialist in one field. An expert in one field has enormous risks. Personal branding is fine, but if you decide on one specialty and combine it with other things, you wil            l become a much more competitive person. For instance, I have a personal brand called SNS marketing expert, but I focus on marketing and weaving AI, start-up, Non-Fungible Token (NFT), and so on. You are creating creativity and opportunities by combining different fields from a marketing perspective.

   Lastly, I want to say something to students dreaming of starting a business. In the latest research on confidence, confidence is distinguished by overestimation, over-placement, and over-precision. Among them, the confidence that “I believe what I do is the right way” and that “I can achieve it corresponds to” too much clarity, and this is the confidence that has the best influence on start-ups. Therefore, set a big goal and believe that you can definitely achieve it with good results. Then you can accomplish some achievement on that goal. If you stare at the goal, you end up there. The first book I wrote was called “How to Achieve Dreams with Blogs,” when I was in the military, I wrote specifically and in detail about what I wanted and what I wanted for the future. Most of them actually fit, and I wrote about that experience. In conclusion, I want to tell you that if you set a high goal and have faith that you can do it unconditionally, you can achieve it.

Q6. Many students are worried about their careers because they do not know what they want to do, and they are worried about changing departments or career paths due to their suitability with the department. Do you have any advice you want to give them?

   First, I recommend taking a lecture called, “Start-up and career exploration,” this semester, and a lecture called “Technology Start-up capstone design” in the fall semester, which I teach. It is okay if you do change your career path or do not change. I want to tell you this just try to make the choice you can make better with your efforts. When you decide a choice, then you have to believe that the choice is the best one, and it is one of the ways to succeed, even if you are feeling like failing due to that choice. I was quite regretful when I was studying animal husbandry, but now I think it was a good choice since the hottest fields in a start-up are the livestock industry. For now, there will be a lot of worries about choosing something. Once you decided on a choice, just try to make it the best choice without any regrets about conducting yourself.

Q7. What are your next plans or your goals?

   The final goal is to build a school. Previously, I had the idea of “creating a school with economic freedom,” and my goal was to create a school that could solve food, clothing, and shelter problems. Since I was in the military, my dream has been to build schools, and to help “a world where people can be treated as humans” by building a school that can solve food, clothing, and shelter problems in places where there is no such infrastructure. This used to be an almost impossible goal; however, nowadays, things have changed a lot with innovations in mobile and technology. For instance, I do not have to build schools locally; we can structure them online. Also, I can get donations or get crowdfunding, and I can create a system where they can make their own money by educating them on their skills. If they can only develop access to information, I think it is possible to achieve quantum jump by learning and developing themselves.
