[Notice] Guidelines for Part-Time Employment Permit for Foreign Students with a D-2 (Study) Visa in the 2024-2 Semester

2024-09-23     Lee Jae-won

We are informing you of the following changes to "2. Eligibility - Section Da" in the existing guidelines for part-time employment for international students. The basic principle is that part-time employment is generally allowed only for jobs typically done by students, such as part-time work.

Regarding eligibility, students must have a GPA of 2.0 or higher from the previous semester. Undergraduate students can apply, but those in extra semesters or who have completed their courses are not eligible. Graduate students in extra semesters or those who have finished their courses are allowed to work. Additionally, a TOPIK certificate is required. Undergraduate students in their first and second years must have Level 3 or higher, while those in their third year and above, as well as graduate students, must have Level 4 or higher. If the TOPIK level requirement is not met, certain allowances apply as of August 15th, 2024. Students in language training programs, associate degree programs, or bachelor's programs can work up to 10 hours per week, while master's and PhD students can work up to 15 hours per week. Programs conducted entirely in English are permitted if supporting documents are provided, and MBA students must have an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher.

Permitted working hours are up to 30 hours per week for undergraduate students, with no limits on weekends, holidays, and vacations, while graduate students can work up to 35 hours per week under the same conditions. The total duration of part-time work is limited to a maximum of one year within the stay period, and students can only work at two locations.

Certain industries are prohibited for part-time work. If the business registration certificate lists construction or manufacturing, students are not allowed to work there unless they hold a TOPIK Level 4 or higher. Additionally, long-distance work exceeding 1 hour and 30 minutes from the student's residence or university is not permitted. If there is a change in the workplace, it must be reported within 15 days.

Penalties for violations are strict. For a first violation, no part-time employment is allowed for one year. For a second violation, students cannot engage in part-time work during their study period and for a third violation, the student visa may be canceled, leading to deportation. Immediate deportation will occur for a first violation in the construction industry, regardless of prior violations.

To apply for part-time work, students must submit various required documents, including their passport, alien registration card, application form, part-time employment confirmation form, transcript, TOPIK certificate, a copy of the business registration certificate, and the original standard employment contract detailing the hourly wage, job description, and working hours. If the business registration includes multiple industries, an additional confirmation form and a copy of the employer's ID are required.

The application process involves preparing the necessary documents, filling out the applicant's section of the Part-Time Employment Permit Form, having the employer complete their section, and obtaining verification from the Global Student Team before submission, either in person at the Immigration Office or online via HiKorea.

Important notes include the necessity of obtaining prior approval before starting part-time work. Graduate students receiving payment for research project participation must report this as part-time work, while no reporting is required for work-study programs like assistantships or scholarships. Lastly, Government Scholarship Students(KGSP) are prohibited from engaging in part-time work during the semester.

Lastly, to fill out the "Part-Time Employment Confirmation Form," it must match the employment contract precisely and be submitted for verification at least seven days before the employment start date. The minimum hourly wage for 2024, set at 9,860 KRW, must be clearly stated in both the employment contract and the confirmation form. Unauthorized modifications to these documents are not allowed. For more information, please check the attached files below and the school's international announcements online.
